How should a weigh filler be checked with reference weights?

Reference-weight checks help confirm that the weighing system is behaving consistently, but they do not replace a product trial, legal-metrology advice or a documented quality procedure for the actual packaged goods.

Separate machine checks from product acceptance checks.

A reference weight can prove the load cell and controller are reading a known mass in a known condition. It does not prove that a dusty powder, bouncy granule or fragile product will fill consistently at production speed.

Zero and tare

Confirm the empty pan, hopper or pack support returns to a stable zero before product testing starts.

Use reference weights that suit the measuring range and are controlled by the site quality process.

What should be recorded during routine checks?

A useful record should make it clear what was checked, when, by whom and what happened if a value was outside the agreed tolerance.

Zero, tare and displayed reading before product is introduced.

Any adjustment made to the target, feed cut-off or recipe.

Finished-pack sample results after the reference check.

Operator name, time, batch, product and corrective action where needed.

Is calibration the same as product accuracy?

No. Calibration or reference checking confirms the weighing system against a known mass. Product accuracy also depends on feeder control, product flow, settling time, cut-off, pack tare and how the product behaves during discharge.

Do I need a checkweigher as well as reference weights?

A checkweigher is often useful when finished packs need independent confirmation after filling, sealing or handling. Reference weights check the weighing device; a checkweigher checks the finished pack in the production path.

How often should a weigh filler be checked?

The interval depends on the site quality system, product value, legal requirements, operator changes and process risk. Many buyers define checks at start-up, changeover, after adjustment and at planned intervals during production.
